Sudan: Don't Perform Amputations as Punishment!

Sudan routinely uses forms of corporal punishment such as flogging, stoning, and others that violate human rights. The government is now using amputation as punishment.

Government doctors recently amputated, by court order, the right hand and left foot of Adam Al-Muthna for an armed robbery charge. Called cross-amputation, a cruel form of torture, it was done by the Sudanese Ministry of Interior's Al Rebat Hospital. Article 168(b) of the Sudanese Penal Code cites this as a punishment for armed robbery that leads to major injuries or the equivalent of US $340 in damages. Sudan also uses amputation and corporal punishment as a means of social control.

Sudan has committed to stopping the use of these punishments as a party of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, but has yet to follow through. Please tell the Sudanese Ministry of Interior to stop these punishments once and for all!

Dear Sudanese Ministry of Interior,

Recently, a man in Sudan had his hand and foot amputated because he committed an armed robbery. His name is Adam Al-Muthna and the torture was carried out at the Sudanese Ministry of Interior's Al Rebat Hospital.

This is called cross-amputation, and is a cruel and inhumane punishment imposed by the state through means such as the Sudanese Penal Code. However, Sudan has made a commitment to stop these punishments as a party of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
