Stop Blocking a Bill to Feed 52,000 Hungry Kids!

  • by: Care2 Causes

In America today, children face a hunger crisis. 1 in 4 American kids -- that's 17 million -- live in a household where food is sometimes scarce.

In February of 2011, the Alaskan State Senate held a vote on Senate Bill 3. At a cost of just 50 cents per child per day, the bill would allow the state to fund school breakfasts and lunches for 52,000 Alaskan children in need. The estimated total yearly spending on the bill would amount to less than one tenth of one percent of Alaska's state budget.

Senate Bill 3 passed with a nearly unanimous vote. But for over a year, the bill has languished in the Alaska State House of Representatives. Republican Bill Stoltze, Co-Chair of the House Finance Committee, has refused to allow a House vote on the bill.

Tell Representative Stoltze to stop paying politics with child hunger! Urge him to allow the Alaska State House of Representatives to hold a fair vote on Senate Bill 3.
Dear Representative Stoltze,

American children are facing a hunger crisis. 1 in 4 American kids -- that's 17 million -- live in homes where food is not always available. Many of these children have hardworking parents who, in the face of rising food prices and continuing economic instability, just can't always make ends meet.

52,000 Alaskan children would benefit from Alaska's Senate Bill 3. For a cost of just 50 cents per child per day, Senate Bill 3 would allow Alaska's schools to offer more, higher quality school meals to children from low-income families at breakfast and lunch time.

Numerous studies have shown that children who eat healthy meals at school score higher on academic test scores than children who regularly go hungry. Many school districts have found that better funding for school meal programs pays for itself -- when healthy food enables children to focus their attention on schoolwork and perform better in class, less funding is needed for remedial education.

Senate Bill 3 passed the Alaska State Senate nearly unanimously, with bipartisan support, in February of 2011. But for over a year, you, in your position as Co-Chair of the House Finance Committee, have refused to let the bill come to a vote on the floor of the Alaska State House of Representatives. America's children do not deserve to watch adults play politics with their futures while they go hungry. Please allow Senate Bill 3 to come to a fair vote in the Alaska State House of Representatives.
