There are approximately 5,000 grey wolves left in the 48 lower states of America. While they are commonly portrayed as bloodthirsty predators, wolves are a vital part of our ecosystem as they maintain a controlled population of various wildlife.
Every year, for example, beavers cause millions of dollars worth of damage and destroy valuable timber resources. They frequently flood forests, girdle and cut down trees, eat tree seedlings, and plug up irrigation ditches with culverts of wood. This can be all be avoided by redistributing wolves into critical areas, as illustrated by a major decline of wolves in 1992. As a result of the wolf population's decline, there were 20% more beavers present and a huge increase in damage costs. However, after only two years of the reintroduction of wolves to that area, the beaver population was in control.
When it comes to the common myths regarding livestock, it is actually proven that, when wolves are present, the number of wildlife herbivores (such as elk) are far lower than the number of livestock (such as cattle). Thus, it is evident that wolves do not regularly prey on essential farm animals.
Furthermore, with the redistribution of wolves into the 48 lower states of America, humans are at no risk. According to the World Health Organization, 55,000 people die from rabies annually, with 99% of these cases being a result of dog bites.
Why would we welcome man's best friend into our homes with open arms when we deny their ancestors the right to naturally thrive in the wild?
