According to public records and media reports, San Clemente, California resident Ray Haines illegally set out a bowl of dog food laced with the toxic drain cleaner Drano in his yard to kill "nuisance" wildlife on April 9, 2012. The food was reportedly placed just 8 feet from the neighbor's fence. Atlas, a German shepherd mix, and Diablito, an 8-pound dog, were both sickened and suffered convulsions after apparently eating the concoction, and while a veterinarian was able to save Atlas, Diablito sadly perished. News sources state that an empty can of dog food, a bottle of Drano, a mixing bowl, and a spoon were later found on Haines' property.
