Petition to list the Atantic BluefinTuna as Endangered

  • by: Laurie Cartman
  • recipient: The Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Canada
We the undersigned, formally request that Canada, through it's Minister of Fisheries and Ocean's Service, list the Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) as endangered under the Canadian Species at Risk Act (S.C. 2002, c. 29).  The Atlantic bluefin tuna
meet the criteria for listing and urgently need the protections afforded by the Species at Risk Act (also known as SARA).

Although Canada is an active member of ICCAT (The International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas), it's current stance of encouraging changes to the way highly migratory fish stocks are managed, and pushing for improved conservation and management measures has been insufficient in protecting the Atlantic Bluefin Tuna.

In May 2011, the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife (COSEWIC) released its decision on the Bluefin Tuna and advised it should be protected under the Canada's Species at Risk Act.  This group, made up on concerned citizens and scientists has done a thorough investigation of this issue and Canada should take the necessary actions to meet their recommendations.

According to the COSEWIC report, Atlantic Bluefin Tuna is one of the most highly sought-after fish species in the world, with some market prices exceeding $1,000.00 per kilogram.  This high value has driven the species into steep decline since the 1970s with over-fishing as the single largest threat to the species.

Please take action to protect this species from extinction, our oceans and our planet require it.
