Demand Tony Abbott take climate change seriously

  • by: Michael Taylor
  • recipient: Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of Australia

Tony Abbotts “Direct Action” scheme has been called Mickey Mouse, and better than nothing. It has been heavily criticised by economists and climate scientists alike, who say the scheme will fail to meet Australia's reduction target.

A Fairfax Media survey of 35 prominent university and business economists found only two believed direct action was the better way to limit Australia's greenhouse gas emissions. Thirty - or 86 per cent - favoured the existing carbon price scheme. Yet the Australian government has refused to budge.

In a scheme that seems to actually benefit big business more than it does the environment, one has to wonder if Tony Abbott is taking climate change seriously; when the big United Nations summit on climate change was on in New York in September, only three world leaders failed to arrive and one of them was Tony Abbott. Surely if one was serious about climate change you would not only listen to the experts locally, but also attend the United Nations summit and get some valuable insight from experts around the world.

But not only is Abbott ignoring the experts, he is also ignoring the Australian people. In a recent poll, 57 per cent of Australians rejected Labour's carbon tax law and only 12 per cent believed in Mr Abbott's policy.

The direct action policy will use taxpayer's money in buying emissions reductions from polluters and planting more trees, but the recent poll indicates a no-confidence vote in the direct action plan

Australians are committed to reduce carbon emissions, but we are not easily fooled by Abbotts latest scheme. Most Australians actually preferred the policy Labour adopted in the last election which was the emissions trading scheme.

Mr Abbott, we implore you do the right thing for the environment. If you are going to ignore the experts, at least listen to your people. The people who are trusting you with the future of Australia and its environment. Your Direct Action scheme is not going to work, and we demand you take climate change seriously. We need a real plan to reduce carbon emissions.
