Tax plastic straws now!

In recent years, there has been much talk about many of the ways we harm the environment for the sake of convenience. Fast fashion, plastic water bottles, and disposable products such as razors and aluminum foil are often mentioned but there is an elephant in the room: plastic straws.

According to the National Park Service, Americans use 500 million straws everyday and billions per year. These billions of straws are cheap, disposable and widely used and yet many are unaware of their environmental impact. These straws end up polluting the environment, often trashing the ocean and harming marine life.

There are alternatives. For less than $10, you can purchase non disposable straws on Amazon that last for years. You can simply ask not to have straws. But the matter of this is that straws are not sustainable and are hazardous for animal life. This is why I am petitioning for a tax on disposable straws. I propose a tax of 50 cents a straw as this tax will discourage straw use and preserve both our resources and our enviroment.
