Help the Starving Sea Lions off the Pacific Coast

Recent signs of extreme disturbances in the marine ecosystem off the Pacific Coast include sea lions showing effects of starvation and searching desperately for food. This unprecedented crisis demands a prompt and strong response to prevent further disruption of the marine mammal population and their food sources, including fish and less complex forms of marine life such as plankton. The California Coastal Commission has shown great leadership in denying Pacific Electric and Gas a permit for High Energy Seismic Testing due to public outcry and scientific evidence connecting underwater decibels to damage to the marine ecosystem. Now we are seeing that even Low Energy Seismic Testing which can peak at over 200 decibels may be coinciding with and causing or contributing to the die off in the Pacific which is being made most visible by the Sea lion strandings and starvation. Signing this petition will help raise awareness and show that the public is not willing to wait until all the evidence is in that this is the cause or sole cause; we demand action now in the face of this crisis. Signing shows support for allowing the fish population to recover and the marine mammals to regain their strength and proper habitat. To do less would be irresponsible given the proportions of the current crisis. When sea lion pups show up at cell phone stores looking for food, we know there is a problem! Please take action now to save the sea lions and other marine life before it is too late. This petition was started on Earth Day 2013. We shouldn't allow the sea lions off the California Coast to experience the slow death of starvation or the suffering of captivity and feeding by humans when they could be thriving in their natural home. Let's help restore their natural habitat by addressing root causes of the crisis, including current ongoing low intensity seismic testing.

Dear California Coastal Commission,

Thank you for your wonderful stand against high intensity seismic testing and naval sonar exercises off the Pacific Coast. You have done marine life and the public a great service by taking these actions and raising awareness on the dangers to the eco-system presented by anthropogenic noise. Now we the undersigned are asking you to press on and build on this momentum by stopping low intensity seismic testing (which at peak can exceed 200 decibels). With our sea lion population starving and suffering, a multi-faceted approach to restoring their habitat and food supply is needed. Eliminating low intensity seismic testing at this time is one important step that can help the fish population rise again and the sea lions and other marine life to thrive once more. Can we do any less as these beautiful animals are dying? Thank you in advance for your support.
