Don't Censor Student Journalism, Fon de Lac School District

  • by: Kevin Mathews
  • recipient: Jon Wiltzius, Principal at Fon de Lac High School

Following a thoughtful article about rape culture - including stories from student rape victims - in a student newspaper, officials at Fon de Lac High School decided to take editorial control of the publication. Moving forward, Principal Jon Wiltzius will have the authority to reject story subjects he does not consider school appropriate.

We ask Wiltzius to reassign editorial control to the students. Not only do students have First Amendment rights, the rape article in question should have never been considered "inappropriate" content in the first place. The fact that students at the school have been raped indicates that the subject is worthy of discussion and reflection. Thus far, the student journalists have demonstrated sound judgment; don't punish them for addressing a controversial topic.
