URGENT! Mill Valley Multi-Use Path Safety NOW!

THE TIME IS NOW TO KEEP OUR COMMUNITY SAFE!

INEVITABLE TRAGEDY ON THE MILL VALLEY MULTI-USE PATH REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ACTION!!

On Saturday September 6, 2014 two young boys were walking on the multi-use path and on their way to their first soccer game of the season.  As they crossed over to Bell/Roper field they were struck by a bicyclist that paramedics estimate was travelling at close to 25 mph.  The accident sent all 3 to the hospital with one of the players suffering multiple fractures to his skull, serious lacerations and a perforated eardrum.

To many this incident was not a surprise but an eventuality.  The time has come to demand action of the part of our local and county government to ensure the safety of our community.

A group of concerned Mill Valley citizens, along with the full support of the Mill Valley Soccer Club, are putting forth common sense measures to avoid this tragic event from occurring again to any of our citizenry, young and old alike and we urge you to sign this petition!

Below are the 3 actions that we are proposing:

  1. IMMEDIATE PLACEMENT OF SIGNAGE & ENFORCEMENT OF SPEED LIMITS: Place a 15 mph speed limit signs on the path starting at Tam High School field (15 mph is official speed limit on multi-use path ).  By the Mill Valley Dog Park place uniformed MV police officers with radar guns that will cite speeding cyclist entering this dangerous area.
  2. CREATE A SLOW ZONE: Initiate the immediate establishment of an official marked ‘Slow Zone’ that runs from the south end of Bell/Roper Field to Camino Alto with posted reduced speed limit of 10 mph.
  3. SPEED GOVENERNORS: Initiate a study that would put physical barriers (speed bumps, rumble strips, gates, etc) within the aforementioned slow zone to govern the speed of cyclists moving through this area.

Thank you for your support to ensure public safety for the near and long term.

Update #59 years ago
Please attend this meeting TODAY! Stephanie M-P sent me this note:

Safety improvement in the works: a "slow zone" on the MUP. where the speed limit will be reduced from 15 to 10 mph. Please attend the hearing at 10:30 Tues! There is opposition by some cyclists who claim they cannot travel as slowly as 10 mph. We need people to come out to speak in favor of the "slow zone"

>> PUBLIC HEARING UPDATE <<
Thanks to everyone who came to the public hearing tonight. It certainly sent a strong message that the community wants to see something tangible done about this dangerous situation. As a Mill Valley residents we need to put pressure on our local government to in turn put pressure on the county to make the actual necessary changes instead of putting the burden on the local citizens...why else do we even have local government??
