Dog Injured New Years Eve. Please prohibit the use of sky lanterns also known as Chinese lanterns

  • recipient: We call on the British Government to take swift action and create a bill Prohibit the use of sky lanterns also known as Chinese lanterns

Sky lanterns are serious fire hazards, they endanger the lives of pets, people, grazing livestock as well as other wildlife. With first hand experience on the New Years Eve as to the implications of this my dog was injured.

Those releasing lanterns have no idea of the hazard they pose, nor do they consider the implications of releasing a naked flame with absolutely no control over where it will land.

Many countries have already banned the use of sky lanterns, including Austria, Australia, Brazil, Canada, New Zealand, Spain Germany and parts of the US.

Lanterns that land in fields can get chopped up when farmers mow for silage or hay, resulting in fragments of wire in the forage.

Cows, which naturally tend to chew things to check them out, get the wire trapped in their gut, resulting in an agonising, slow death for the animal.”

We let the dogs out for the last tiddles around ten past 12 New years Eve. Not a problem you might think as we live in Woodland area and fields surrounding. They ran towards the bottom gate, at first I thought it was a red coat when one of the dogs yelped in pain he had sniffed the lantern that landed in my garden partly on fire he had inhaled the flame.

Downing Street ruled out a ban in 2012 lets change this for 2014.

PLEASE BAN THESE 20.pence DANGEROUS ITEMS THAT HARM

The picture is of my dog that is injured after inhaling a flame from a lantern New Years Eve...

Sky Lanters are often marketed as “biodegradable” or “earth- friendly”, both untrue. Sky lanterns are made with treated paper, wires and/or a bamboo ring. None of which is safe when tossed into the environment to land in some far off place. These lanterns have killed animals, wild & domestic. They have caused burn injuries to people & have started huge fires in fields & houses.
