Animal Cruelty Arrests: Duct Tape Used To Close Dog's Mouth

BERKELEY COUNTY, WV - Animal control officers are calling it one of the worst cases of animal abuse they've seen.

A pit bull was found in an attic with evidence that its mouth had been duct-taped shut and chained.

The three-year-old dog was emaciated, neglected and abused, with open wounds on its face that are too graphic to show.

Witnesses say the abuse had gone on for weeks.

Berkeley County Animal Control and city police found the dog Wednesday.

On Thursday police arrested Randall Siford, Jr. and Breshannon Devereux.

Angela Brown moved into the neighborhood recently and has two pit bulls of her own. She says she never knew the two had a dog because she never saw them with one before.

Statements given to police say the dog named Ice was beaten repeatedly.

%u201CThat saddens me because pit bulls already have a bad name, and it's because of stuff like that I think that's why half of them are viscous,%u201D Brown said.

Ice is now getting a warmer reception in the hands of Berkeley County Animal Control until the case goes to court.

Riford and Devereaux are charged with felony animal cruelty. If they're not convicted, Ice will be turned back over to them.

Felony animal cruelty carries a maximum five-year sentence in West Virginia.

We who signed this petition want Justice for Ice the pit bull terrier who was locked in the attic with his mouth taped shut and beaten. We would like to see Randall Siford, Jr. and Breshannon Devereux go to Jail for at least 5 years for what they have done to this poor defenseless dog. We also hope they will be fined and no longer allowed to own another animal.

Due to the strong link shown between deliberate animal abuse and other criminal abuse, these men should be punished to the fullest extent of the law. Not only should Ice be allowed to go to another home where he will be loved and cared for, neither of these people should be permitted to have any other animal in the future. Countless studies have shown that serial killers start with the torture and killing of animals. I'm not saying that this is where the torturers of Ice are headed, but animal cruelty must be treated as the heinous crime it is. Send these criminals away for the maximum time allowed. The fact that Ice is a pit bull should not be in play at all. Pits are NOT vicious unless made to be. Place them in responsible hands and they are loving family pets. And they can be rehabilitated--remember Vick's dogs?Any animal can be made vicious if treated cruelly and trained to be so.

Randall Siford, Jr. and Breshannon Devereux need to serve their time in jail and Ice deserves medical care and a home that will love him and care for him the proper way. No human being should ever be allowed to do this to any animal! Just imagine how these people treat other adults or little kids. Randall Siford, Jr. and Breshannon Devereux were obviously trying to kill Ice. It seems like they taped Ice's mouth shut so nobody could here him cry for help, then they starved him so he would die a slow, painful death, and then they beat him to cause more of a slow, painful death. Ice did not deserve any of this! No animal deserves to live like this! Randall Siford, Jr. and Breshannon Devereux need to serve the maximum amount of jail time and should never ever be allowed to have any animals! This is heartbreaking and I don't want to even think of a person beating an animal. This poor dog had no way to defend himself! This poor dog probably got his name from freezing up like ice when these people would beat him! If this dog is returned to those people, I will lose hope for the world because that is wrong! If these people did this to a child, we all know they would never be able to see that child again and would face many. many years in prison. Please give Ice the justice he deserves!
