The ASPCA recently announced a $12,500 grant to a program called “Unleashed,”
a non-profit that empowers young girls through advocating for animal rights and welfare.
Unleashed works with middle school girls in New York City. It is an after school leadership program
focused on animal rescue and welfare. The girls get hands on experience with rescuing dogs.
They work in groups to help adoptable dogs in overcrowded shelters.
Learning how to work together and lead to help save the dogs and find them adoptive homes.
“Our philosophy is that human rights and animal rights movements are very synergistic,”
said Stacey Radin, founder of Unleashed. “So over the course of 12 weeks,
while the girls are talking about and learning about and researching the many different issues
including homelessness, abandonment, neglect, overpopulation, dog fights, puppy mills –
you name it – they’re also digging deep beneath the surface to understand the root of the cause
of these issues and then looking at the consequences if those issues continue to happen.”
