The nuclear industry is wanting a site for long-term storage of radioactive waste because its containment areas on plant sites are filling, and once filled they will have to stop production...unless they can get someone else to take their deadly garbage, thus contaminating one or more new sites and endangering every life and place on the transportation routes.
Medical facilities generate rad waste, too, and this also should be handled on site. Most medical radioactive wastes, however, have much shorter half-lives and in a reasonable amount of time can be treated as less hazardous waste. (There is NO safe level of radiation, as it accumulates in the body over time, but, generally, medical radioactive waste does not require long-term storage.)
Yucca Mountain and the Reservation there must NOT become a waste receptacle for our modern day deadly waste.
NO place should.
Also, hijacking of mobile waste for dirty bombs is not an impossibility.
Keep the high-, and 'low'- level waste on the nuke sites, let the waste containment facilities fill to bloating and SHUT DOWN the nukes!!!
