Equitable School Funding for Baltimore

We believe all students in our public schools deserve an excellent education and an equitable share of the school system’s resources.

The city’s charter school alliance demanded an increase of over $600 per pupil in the most recent budget, even after state funding for education was cut by nearly $23 million. When the city school board refused, some charter school operators filed suit against the school district. The outcome of the suit could require a shift of tens of millions of dollars to charter schools, likely at the expense of equity for traditional neighborhood schools.

Therefore, we have united to call for:
• Litigating charter operators to drop their lawsuit so that they can engage in open negotiations,
• District-wide school funding negotiations in public that include traditional neighborhood school representatives,
• Equitable funding for all students, whether they attend a charter or traditional neighborhood school, and
• A unified approach to fight for more state funding
