A 100year old Historical Umbrella Tree is due to be destroyed because they say that it has a fungus infection . We are concerned that if the tree is remove and another put in its place the historical connection with Queen Victoria would be lost. We want the council to consider the public's opinion and allow the tree to be treated for the fungus infection .
Please help save this much loved landmark, the East Cowes umbrella tree is over 100yrs old. It's partner tree which was also planted in west cowes has already gone . They were planted by Queen Victoria's estate manager who still have descendants that live locally. We have been told that the reason they want to remove the tree is because it has a fungus problem but it seems that there has not been any commitment to try to solve this . Independent surveys of the tree by qualified tree surgeons have been carried out who have stated that the tree has plenty of life left in it for many more years to come . So why not allow for it to be treated . It occupies a position in the heart of the shopping area and if destroyed it would take many decades for a replacement to grow to the equivalent size and of course the royal connection would be totally lost. Many families from the village have fond memories of the tree, and feel that if destroyed it would be another nail in the coffin for the local connection to Queen Victoria .
