Stop the Sell Off of Royal Mail!

  • by: Richard Andrews
  • recipient: Chancellor of the Exchequer: The Rt Hon George Osborne
Royal Mail was a national institution.

In 2013, the Tory administration famously sold off 60% of the business - with George Osborne's best man making £35m from "freely available knowledge ...". The government was accused of selling a national asset too cheaply after the shares spiked 38% after they sold them.

Last week the government announced, with no mandate and anger still rife about the previous sale, to sell the remaining 30%* to the private sector. No doubt the rest of George's wedding party will be in for a summer bonus. Any 'benefit' from supposedly paying off some of the national debt is unlikely to be felt by most members of the public.

Full privatisation of Royal Mail is likely to mean poorer working conditions for staff, lower standards of service for the public and an increase in prices, because as a private company it will try to make a profit.

On 11 June, 15% — half of the remaining publicly owned portion of Royal Mail — was sold.

We must protect the last 15% of our once fully nationally owned postal service. It's YOUR postal service that is being effectively stolen from you by this government.

Try signing this petition to put pressure on the government. You CAN make a difference.

*The other 10% was given to staff in 2013

George Osborne,

We have signed this petition because we do not agree with your decision to sell off the remaining 15% of Royal Mail stock.

RM was a national institution - it is not a means for profit by the private sector.

Full privatisation of Royal Mail is likely to mean poorer working conditions for staff, lower standards of service for the public and an increase in prices, because as a private company it will try to make a profit.

We urge you to reconsider this decision.
