Thank N.Y. Senate for Voting to Ban the Shark Fin Trade

  • by: Animal Advocates
  • recipient: Governor Andrew Cuomo, Senator Charles Schumer, Senator Kirstan Gillibrand

The New York Senate Environmental Conservation Committee voted in favor of a bill (S.6431) that would ban the trade, sale, possession and distribution of shark fins throughout the state. The New York state Senate voted unanimously to outlaw the shark fin trade. Now the bill goes for a vote by the New York Assembly, and then to Governor Andrew Cuomo to be signed into law.

Shark fins are an Asian delicacy, and used to make soup in certian ethnic cultures. Sharks are caught, have their fins chopped off, and are thrown back int the ocean to sink and drown, being unable to swim. Aside from shark finning being inhumane and barbarically cruel, many sharks are now endangered. It is estimated that 73 million sharks are stripped of their fins and dumped back into the ocean, where they sink to the bottom and drown.

Thank New York Senators for voting in favor of  bill S.6431 to ban the shark fin trade; and encourge Governor Andrew Cumoo to sign the bill into law.
