US Army: Get Rid of Your Racially Biased Hair Guidelines!

  • by: A. Ward
  • recipient: John McHugh, Secretary of the Army

The U.S. Army has implemented new hairstyle rules that unfairly target African-American women. Army Regulation 670-1 prohibits among other things, no more than 2 inches of hair bulk, no more than 2 braids and plain hairbands only. The example of unauthorized hairstyles accompanying the new guidelines depict hairstyles worn almost exclusively by African-American women.

While it is understood that the military is a profession that discourages individuality, it can be extremely difficult for African-American women to follow these new hair guidelines in foreign countries where chemicals needed to straighten hair is sparse. This leaves them no choice but to wear their hair in its natural state. Even so, this total disregard for ethnic individuality is unacceptable.

Please ask the U.S. Army to amend Regulation 670-1 and take into account the inherent needs of African-American service members.

Attn: John McHugh, Secretary of the Army

Dear Secretary McHugh,

Today's Army is a diverse population representative of the population of the United States as a whole. While we understand that the military is a profession that encourages assimilation, there are some aspects of the human experience that cannot and should not be changed.

Whether a servicemember wears 1 braid or 10, makes no difference in the performance of their duties and their willingness to protect our Nation.

Army Regulation  670-1 targets African-American's with an expectation to conform to unfair, racist standards for hairstyles.

Please amend this regulation taking into account the needs of our African-American service members.

Sincerely,
