AMAZING NEWS: The advocacy efforts of WAW and all our sister organizations -- and all of you who signed and shared the petitions -- succeeded!
Thanks to international pressure, President Karzai has asked for the draft of the law to be amended! We will stay vigilant to make sure the amendments respect the human rights of all Afghans.
Congratulations to us all for coming together as a powerful force for justice!
On behalf of all Afghan people and people around the world who insist on human rights, we ask you NOT to sign the law recently passed by the Afghan parliament.
In a country where violence against women, particularly violence perpetrated by family members, is rampant, this law is a travesty of justice since it will deny women the right to testify against fathers, husbands, parents-in-law who have raped, beaten, tortured, sold or prostituted them.
This law that denies victims the right to testify against their assailants or that prevents relatives from testifying against assailants of others has no place in the legal system of a country that calls itself civilized or that aspires to join the community of people in the world who strive for justice. Progress on women’s rights in Afghanistan has occurred despite enormous obstacles because the Afghan people support it.
If you sign this law, you will be complicit in the abuse and torture of women and children. You will have blood on your hands.
Please dismiss this law immediately, and protect Afghan women’s rights and their physical security.
