Recess Army: Seattle Kids Need Time to Eat and Play!

The Seattle School District has proposed cutting elementary lunch and recess time from the current 20 minutes each to only 15 minutes each!

Fifteen minutes is simply not enough time to eat a full and nutritious lunch. Children will either stuff themselves too quickly or do without. Either way we are not supporting a healthy environment for our children.

Labor laws in Washington State require a 30 minute meal period for employees who put in the same 6 hour day. Our children deserve better.

Kids time on the playground can be some of the most important time of the day. Self-guided outdoor play is not the same as PE, and has been endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a way to combat the troubling increase in childhood obesity, increase kids ability to resolve conflict, and help prepare kids to pay attention in class.

Seattle Public Schools: Listen to the kids! They need time to eat and play!

Your proposal to cut elementary lunch and recess time from the current 20 minutes each to only 15 minutes each is unacceptable to kids and parents.

Please abandon this ill-considered proposal.
