Mr. Ronald Westbrook was a 72-year old elderly man in Georgia who suffered from Alzheimer’s. He seemed to wander off early one morning onto one of the neighbor’s property, a Mr. Joe Hendrix. When Mr. Hendrix and his fiancé saw the shadow of this “intruder,” the fiancé dialed 911 while Mr. Hendrix decided to take matter into his own hands. He fired four shots at this silhouette, killing Mr. Westbrook.
Mr. Hendrix claimed that he called out to the individual several times and with no response, shot at him. He and his fiancé felt threatened, so instead of staying locked inside the home with 911 dispatch on the phone, Mr. Hendrix went out at shot at the intruder without considering who he was, as is the case with several recent intruder incidents. Like Michigan and Florida, Georgia has an aggressive law that permits deadly force in self-defense, both inside and outside the home. As a result, an innocent, elderly, sick individual was shot dead because he inadvertently lost his way.
In trying the case of Mr. Hendrix, they are considering Georgia’s Stand Your Ground Law in regards to pressing charges and making him accountable for his actions. We need to get justice for poor Mr. Westbrook and convict Mr. Hendrix of murder. There was no need for him to shot this man to death. He could’ve taken cover within his home until authorities arrived to do their job. Mr. Westbrook would still be alive today!
