El Salvador - Stop Criminalizing Miscarriage and Abortion!

  • by: A. Ward
  • recipient: Attorney General, El Salvador

A woman using the alias "Guadalupe" has already served more than 7-years of a 30-year jail sentence because it is suspected that she purposely caused her own miscarriage. She was a teen when she entered prison and was hoping to be paroled. But when the Right-Wing Congress took a vote - her freedom was denied.

In El Salvador even when a female has a miscarriage she can be charged with fetal homicide. Its judicial system criminalizes abortion for any reason and in addition its laws can be potentially used to punish all pregnant women. In other words, every woman who experiences pregnancy complications is at risk of being charged as a criminal.

Please sign this petition urging the Government of El Salvador to abolish this strict, inhumane law.

Attn: Attorney General, El Salvador;

We (the undersigned) implore you to take action to decriminalize abortions and miscarriages. The current law is making criminals out of women who, through no fault of their own, suffer a miscarriage. Recently, a young woman using the alias "Guadalupe,"  was a teen when she entered prison for having a miscarriage. She was hoping to be paroled. But when the Right-Wing Congress took a vote her freedom was denied.

Please take steps to abolish this strict, inhumane law.

Sincerely,
