A PETITION FOR HOPE

Currently the NWT does not have an Animal Protection Act

Please do not allow Hope to suffer in vain.

At this moment she continues to fight for her life.

We the concerned and caring people of Hay River, the Northwest Territories, and across Canada, call upon the elected members of the GNWT Legislative Assembly and the elected Member of Parliament for the Western Arctic, Denis Bevington, NDP, to produce an Animal Protection Act which will live up to the standards of Animal Protection as contained within the Criminal Code of Canada and across the rest of the Country of Canada.

The ongoing incidents of animal neglect, abuse and abandonment by negligent owners must stop.  It is time for Positive Action to be taken, as in the example of the Yukon%u2019s recent amendments to their own Animal Protection Act.

Prosecution under the current Criminal Code (Bill S-203, with contained amendments) is not being enforced.  Community By-Laws do not provide for adequate criminal charges nor penalties against offenders.

We also petition that charges under the Criminal Code of Canada be applied and enforced  to all offenders under Bill S203 until such time as an Animal Protection Act is in place within the Northwest Territories.
