The City of New Britain CT continues to euthanize healthy dogs rather than utilize Petfinder to encourage adoption of these animals. A local group of volunteers has stepped forward to stop this process, which has been going on for years, and start a "Friends of New Britain Animal Control" which saves dogs that are able to be placed, advertises them, spays/neuters them and promotes responsible ownership. Despite the many attempts to implement such actions, the Chief of New Britain has decided that he doesnt feel this is necessary because some of the animals get taken by the local Humane Society. This group is willing to devote their time to reduce the amount of dogs that do loose their lives when their time is up and takes the initiative of conducting the adoption process on their own, rather than handing it off to the Humane Society.
Volunteers have saved some which now have loving homes, but there are more every week, that need help!! Wont you be their voice and sign this petition to, at the very least, encourage the City of New Britain Animal Control to advertise on Petfinder and reduce the euthanasia of healthy dogs. This is a system many other cities and towns have utilized.....it is far time New Britain CT does too!
In recent times, many local volunteers have stepped forward to volunteer their time and help in starting a "Friends of New Britain Animal Control" in order to increase adoption of city shelter dogs and reduce euthanasia.
As already proposed to you, the group has volunteered to temperament test potentially adoptive animals, place them on petfinder, conduct home visits and promote responsible ownership as well as the importance of spaying and neutering. We believe this would reduce the amount of shelter dogs which are euthanized and save lives! Furthermore, the City of New Britain would no longer be paying the cost for euthanasia for each animal but would instead be aquiring money through increased adoptions of these shelter dogs.
Despite our efforts and proposal, you have refused to meet with us and have left us with the impression that you have no regard for these animals lives. Most Animal Control facilities in Connecticut utilize the Petfinder website to display the animals that are up for adoption yet you have stated that you feel the City of New Britain does not need to. This proposal is not only brought fourth by responsible citizens of the City you work for, which is in itself a great thing, but it poses many more benefits, as stated above.
Perhaps some animals get placed but there are many that get euthanized when they could have been placed in loving homes. Euthanasia should NEVER be the first option, but rather the last. I encourage you, at the very least, to make sure your animal control officer utilizes petfinder, as most others do! We will also continue our efforts to start "Friends of New Britain Animal Control" and hope that the city will see the advantages of such a group. Our hope is that you will set a postive example of what to do...rather than a negative one. Thank You for your time.
