Investigation of Animal Abuse in Florida Public School

  • by: Animal Advocates
  • recipient: William P. Cervone, State Attorney, Eighth Judicial Circuit of Florida
According to eyewitnesses and information gathered by United Poultry Concerns, the following information has come to light:

On April 15, 2009, two students at Hawthorne High School, in Alachua County, bashed a chicken to the ground and posted the episode on YouTube. The students in question can be heard commenting, during the abuse of the animal, "Rip him apart!" and "This is animal cruelty!" fully aware they were torturing and abusing an animal.

Inside the school, students tortured chickens to death in an orgy of cruelty while teacher Allen Shaw looked the other way.

This incident was recorded via video recording and then uploaded to YouTube.com for others to view.  The recording can be accessed here: http://upc-online.org/hawthorne/

We, the Undersigned, are respectfully requesting that this incident be thoroughly investigated and all responsible parties be prosecuted under any/all applicable state statutes and county ordinances, specifically:

Florida Criminal Statutes - Title XLVI - Chapter 828.12

(1) Cruelty to animals.  A person who unnecessarily overloads, overdrives, torments, deprives of necessary sustenance or shelter, or unnecessarily mutilates, or kills any animal, or causes the same to be done, or carries in or upon any vehicle, or otherwise, any animal in a cruel or inhumane manner, is guilty of a misdemeanor of the first degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $5,000, or both.

(2) A person who intentionally commits an act to any animal which results in the cruel death, or excessive or repeated infliction of unnecessary pain or suffering, or causes the same to be done, is guilty of a felony of the third degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or by a fine of not more than $10,000, or both.

We respectfully request this incident be immediately investigated and pursued, if not already.  We ask that this alleged crime be treated with all serious and professional demeanor by judicial and law enforcement authorities in representing the people of Florida and our desire for justice and humane treatment of animals within Florida.

We further request that law enforcement authorities do not delay with an investigation of this alleged incident of severe, violent animal abuse, and that resulting warrants are served in a timely manner.
