Save the Beach Point Lighthouse

"On May 27, 2010, Fisheries and Oceans Canada declared approximately 480 active lighthouses and approximately 490 inactive lighthouses across Canada surplus to its needs. Beach Point has been deemed one of these lighthouses.on December 23,2010 when the lighthouse in Beach Point was lifted off of its platform and moved up the beach during the storm. We want to bring as much attention as we can to the Federal Government to try and save this part of the Community and its history"

We the undersigned ask that you consider our concerns:

Please Save the 'Beach Point' Lighthouse!

In December 2010, during a vicious winter storm, parts of PEI's picturesque coastline and its harbours were severely battered, damaged and/or destroyed.
In the Eastern PEI community of Beach Point; the lighthouse (formally known as the Murray Harbour Front Range Light) was literally knocked off its foundation and pushed, by the forces of nature, up the beach a couple of hundred feet to rest on its side.
While DFO did drag the lighthouse up the beach to safer ground; as of today, this lighthouse remains on its side and  the foundation remains empty.

Recently, the DFO deemed a number of PEI's active lighthouses SURPLUS but we maintain lighthouses continue to be an important part of the PEI landscape.
We live on an island and lighthouses have been an important part of our landscape for over a century. While some may say lighthouses are now obselete with GPS technology now available for navigation; many local fishers, sailors and visitors  still use this rangelight to safely guide them through this narrow inlet.
If we continue to toss aside important pieces of our PEI landscape in the name of progress; we risk  losing what makes PEI so attractive and unique to Islanders and visitors alike!
The old saying "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. In this instance, "IT IS BROKE AND WE NEED TO FIX IT!!
This light is a focal point and a tourist attraction to this small but beautiful community.

We are calling on our Federal Government to support our small community and re-instate the light to its once glorious condition.

Thank you for taking the time to read our letter and we hope for a positive response to our concerns.
