We, the residents, taxpayers, animal lovers and advocates are outraged about the blatant misuse and wasteful spending of our HARD EARNED TAX PAYERS’ MONEY at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter (Wantagh, New York) that has caused our animals to needlessly suffer and be killed. This shelter uses approximately $7.1 Million Dollars a year, 3x the amount of shelters comparable in size and almost half of that budget is spent on payroll. Now, more than ever before due to the enormous public outcry for justice and accountability, the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter continues to waste more of the taxpayers’ money to over compensate for the horrific conditions that have been recently exposed in the Town’s desperate effort to clean up the Shelters’ image to gain notoriety, public acceptance and for Kate Murray –“VOTES”.
Over the past several months, thousands of phone calls and letters have been submitted to the State Comptroller, The District Attorneys Office, TOH Animal Shelter and the Town Supervisor and Officials, forcing the Town to attempt to correct the mismanagement and misappropriation of Taxpayers Funds. The display of Public concern and outcry was in hope to force the Town to take advantage of the people who were willing to provide UNPAID SERVICES and VOLUNTEERS. Instead the TOH Officials chose to hire more over paid employees and contractors creating over redundant positions, substantial increases in administration, and medical costs while duplicating services and departments that could have been performed, free of charge to the taxpayers.
In addition, and to make matters worse the Town Supervisor and Officials have allowed for the new leadership of the TOH Animal Shelter after a substantial increases in cost and personnel to take an attitude of “EUTHANASIA IS A FACT OF LIFE AT TOH ANIMAL SHELTER.” at a time that most shelters’ all over the country are moving towards “NO-KILL” because it is proven that “SAVING LIVES-SAVES MONEY” Town of Hempstead’s arrogance and unwillingness to change has caused us to move backwards at the horrific expense to the TAXPAYERS!!!!
We, the people, are calling on the Attorney General and the Public Integrity Bureau, to acknowledge and investigate the numerous complaints that have been submitted to your office. We urge your agency to come in and take an active position to oversee this blatant misuse of our Animal Shelter and our tax dollars. Our community is outraged and we deserve answers.
