We have collected over 45,000 signatures! these signatures will be delivered to Fredrik Reinfeldt, Swedish Primeminister; Lena Ek Environment Minister; Bergsstaten, Henning Holmström,Tasman AB; Local governments (Länsstyrelsen) shortly, and your very important voice has been counted. This petition will end on August 3rd 2014 and I'm urging for one last push. Together we will stop this environmental destruction! Thank you for all your support. Anna Back.
Right now I am so amazed and humbled by all your support. How this toxic mining project was ever approved by the Swedish government is beyond me, and against all recommendations! The mine is set to begin in 2017, that gives us three years to get the word out, and to put a final stop to this toxic disaster. In the words of one signer: Tänk efter före! (Have hind sight ahead of time!)
From the bottom of my heart, thank you,
We are up to 376 signatures in one week! Thank you so much for your help. Please share this petition so we can reach more people :)
No Canadian Land Grab! The fourth largest mine of it's kind in the world, is planned at Norra Kärr, Östergötland, Sweden. Rare Earth Mineral mining is among the most toxic, and the most dangerous, and it leaves a trail of destruction, both in the communities and in the wildlife surrounding the area. Rare earth processing plants have left a legacy of severe environmental destruction and of lung, pancreatic, and other cancers among people who live in the region. The acid runoff will drain straight into beautiful lake Vättern, it will destroy ground water as well as drinking water. Lake Vättern is the fifth largest source of drinking water in Europe. The lake is a so called " Natura 2000 skyddsområde" and should have been safe from this kind of harm! The prospected mine will endanger several protected species of flora. The lanthanides, like Zirconium etc, are mixed with Uranium and Thorium, making this project particularly dangerous, and a radiation spill is not only possible, but likely. The mining approval/ rejection should have been handled as a uranium mine. Tasman metals have left a toxic mess behind in many places around the globe. They are not held accountable anywhere they go! They have not set aside any funds in case of an accident! Radiation in this area, would affect drinking water of hundreds of thousands of people, and Many home owners who have been there for MANY generations will also be adersly affected by this mine. Help them, by giving them the voice of many! To date, there are NO REE mines that have NOT left devastation behind! The site is also one of Unescos 600 biosphere areas!
Sweden, if this is longterm care of your Natura 2000, your drinking waters and protected nature, (25 year lease, with option for another 10) what can we really count on you to protect?
No Canadian Landgrab, Stop this mine!
Fredrik Reinfeld , Lena Ek , Bergsstaten, Henning Holmström, and Länsstyrelsen.
Sweden does not want a Rare Earth mine. Norra Kärr and surrounding area does not want a toxic mine. The communities and cities around Vättern do not want acid runoff contaminating their drinking water.
The consequences of even one small misshap are far to great, and this is not a gamble you should take on behalf of all these communities who have clearly said NO.
The track record of Tasman Metal/Molycorp is not spotless, they have left much devastation behind in the palce they mine. Don't be so naive and think that they can't destroy our beautiful country too. Don't take such a gamble for the money, the risks are far to great.
Preserve Vättern, preserve our historic countryside, our Eriksgata, preserve our endangered flora. Stop the mine in Norra Kärr!
