Do Not Allow Beer Middle School Boundary Change

We the parents of in-district students currently attending Beer Middle School, and incoming 6th grade in-district students, demand that the boundaries do not change, causing our children to change schools and attend Carleton Middle School in the 2019/2020 school year.
In April 2019 Dr. Livernois placed phone calls directing parents to the Warren Consolidated Schools website. The website provided the following information – “Beer receives a high number of out-of-district School of Choice students from Fitzgerald impacting its high enrollment. Currently, Beer has nearly 900 students. Carleton, on the other hand has nearly 655 students.”
The website also states the following –
    What is Schools of Choice?
Schools of Choice is a program that permits students who do not reside within the Warren Consolidated School District boundaries to apply for a limited number of openings in our district.

    Who is eligible?
The program is open to any student living within Macomb County, on a space-available basis.

Can I request a specific school or program?
The application form includes a space to indicate your first and second choices for schools. No guarantees are made that any specific school will have space available. However, every effort will be made to accommodate parent preferences on a space-available basis.

The application online states - “WCS make every attempt to honor placement preferences however, final placements are made based on available seats within the building and or programs”.

As stated above, Beer Middle School does not have the space for all of the students. The seats available at Beer Middle School should be reserved for in-district student! In-district students should not lose enrollment in the school that is in OUR school district that they have attended for one or two years.

The students that reside out-of-district should be required to move to Carleton Middle School as that is the school with space available. And as in-district students, our children should be allowed to attend Beer Middle School without losing transportation. The parents of school of choice students coming from out-of-district already provide transportation for their children; they should be required to drive them a little further, to Carleton Middle School, as that is the building where space is available.
