An Open Letter to the Cast and Writers of Supernatural

Dear Jensen Ackles, Jared Padalecki, Jeremy Carver and the Supernatural writing team,

For the past year or so, a faction of a specific subgroup of the SPN fandom has gotten more and more vocal about their “ship” and their displeasure with it not becoming “canon”. Since the finale of season 9, they have gotten even worse, taking to social media to air their rants and showing a blatant disrespect to all of you. The backlash on social media, particularly Twitter, against you after the comments made at the JIB convention in Rome is really what spurred us into action and made us feel compelled to send this message to you.

It saddens us to see our fellow fans act like this and we wish we could make up for their behavior. Please know that they are a small percentage of the fandom and their posts, tweets and messages do not represent us all nor the entirety of the subgroup itself. A lot of us stay silent to avoid conflict and show our support by ignoring this subgroup and by posting positive, encouraging, hate-free messages. However, we unanimously agree they have gone too far by aiming personal attacks at you and continuing to throw temper tantrums when they don’t get their way, despite the fact that you answered their questions regarding the subject matter with honest answers that were in no way disrespectful to them.

With all of this in mind, we have decided that we can’t stay silent, and have to let you know that we support you. Your opinions, how you choose to write the stories for Supernatural, and the manner in which you act it out: we respect it one hundred percent because it’s your show. We understand that the show is here to tell the story of Sam and Dean and that it’s not up to us, nor is it our right, to dictate that story. It’s all you. We thank you for putting in all the time and effort it has taken to get this far and for sticking with it (and us) for so long. We love you for it and the fact you want to keep going makes us love you more. Without your willingness to continue, we wouldn’t have Supernatural and we want to ensure your willingness lasts until you feel the story is finished, which hopefully will not be for many more years!
