Donald Trump loves to brag and boast about his millions of fans and followers, who, according to him, will stand by his side even if he shot someone. He is never shy when it comes to declaring his billionaire status, and most importantly, how charitable he is. And yet, he refuses to make public the very record that would make the case for such statements much better and precisely than he or anyone else ever could.

Donald Trump is also quite vocal when it comes to expressing his contempt for his opponent, whom he calls "crooked Hillary" about the non disclosure of her emails, and has marred the american electorate with the notion that she is corrupt, untrustworthy, controlled by special interest groups. He has gone as far as encouraging foreign hackers to break the law in order to expose the content of her emails. When it comes to defending his own interests, however, Donald Trump has no problem playing the so called secrecy card himself. For instance, he can be seen falling short of meeting his full disclosure responsibilities to the american electorate by telling anchor Chuck Todd during an interview for Face The Nation on July 24 that releasing tax returns cost Mitt Romney the presidential election in 2012.

It bids the question: If his followers are as loyal as he says, why should he be so concerned that subjecting his tax returns to public scrutiny would result in a change of perception by his voters? Or perhaps he is afraid that the documents will ultimately reveal a disturbing reality, very different from the narrative he has created for himself as a competent and generous business man, uniquely capable and qualified to help the disenfranchised and meet the economic challenges faced by our nation.

This may the polished narrative that carried him this far, but it is up to us the voters to let Donald Trump know that he must abide by the same standards for accountability, trustworthiness and character that we would expect from anyone running for President. If he is indeed hiding a messy history whether related to his business acumen, his obligations as a tax payer, or his claims as a philanthropist, we the people deserve to know before we head to the polls in November, after all, as President Lincoln said " You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time.
