At the moment no company MUST to give any of the 5p carrier charge to charity, they are allowed to decide if they want to. But if they could afford to give the public carrier bags for free all this time why should they profit through government legislation? The money was as we were informed to go to charities but the traders were allowed to keep some of the money for administration costs. That's fair enough but why would it take every single penny to cover administration costs for something there aren't doing? Surely a percentage should be guaranteed to be given to charity after all if we have to pay why shouldn't our community benefit from it and shouldn't we be able to contribute at least a suggestion to where it should go!!
If we gather enough signatures then at least 2.5p from the money made from the carrier costs would go to charities based in our own communities like - elderly rest bite centres, community centres, local food banks etc. This would take the strain of fundraising for these charities away or at least lessen their hardships. How many centres have we seen closed down? How many times have heard of food banks struggling for donations in an age and a country where it shouldn't exist. There should be no profit for this legislation for anyone. Small shops sometimes use donation boxes for those 5ps have you ever seen one in your local supermarket? Have you ever been asked where you think this money should go? I'm guessing NO and if you have did you see the difference it made? This can only help our communities. After all this is not only about us but our children and the opportunities available to them. If 5 months of a supermarkets bag costs went to a local charity like a homework class how much easier would it be for kids who are struggling plus also provide a job for a few to help with the homework class. Charities also employ people this may help employment levels in our communities as well as help us make a difference to the environment. Please get behind this petition help our environment and our communities. For the moment this petition is for Scotland only.
