Tell Carrie Underwood to Boycott North Carolina

Ever since North Carolina passed House Bill 2 (HB2), legalizing discrimination against the LGBTQ community, businesses and celebrities have been boycotting the state. And it’s working! The state is losing considerable business over their bigoted laws.

Now Carrie Underwood is slated to perform in North Carolina and we need to convince her to help the cause by cancelling her performance. If the boycott continues, HB2 will be repealed.

HB2 makes it illegal for transgender individuals to use the bathroom that aligns with their gender identity. The law also prevents the expansion of LGBTQ nondiscrimination laws in North Carolina. Until HB2 is repealed, residents of North Carolina will continue to lose their jobs because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The defense for the law is that cisgender males will pretend to be trans and assault women in the women’s bathroom. Not only is that scenario unprecedented, but transgender individuals are statistically more likely to be raped, than commit one. This part of the law has nothing to do with security or safety and everything to do with rampant transphobia.

The boycott of North Carolina has been economically devastating to the state. The NBA just announced that they will not be holding their 2017 All-Star-Game in North Carolina due to HB2, costing North Carolina over $100 million dollars. PayPal canceled their expansion into NC, eliminating 400 jobs. Bruce Springsteen, Itzhak Perlman, Pearl Jam, and recently, Maroon 5, have all canceled concerts in N.C venues. Tourists have been avoiding North Carolina, since HB2 passed, because of its lack of diversity and acceptance.

The economic consequences of the boycott are turning the law’s original supporters against it. State Governor McCrory is still standing by his decision to sign HB2 into law, but as the boycott continues, his popularity is dwindling.

In 2013, Carrie Underwood spoke out in support of marriage equality. “I’m in favor of acceptance,” she told Allure magazine, “and I am a Christian person, and I do love the Lord, and I feel no matter who you are, what you believe, how you live your life, it’s not my place to judge.” If Carrie Underwood truly supports acceptance, she needs to cancel her concert in North Carolina, and join the effort to end HB2.
