Community Support for Opus-Newton Senior Housing Development

2Life Communities has been a proud member of the Newton Community for over 40 years, providing affordable and engaging communities for the 450 low income older adults in our Coleman House and Golda Meir House and with other 2Life communities in Boston, Brookline and Framingham.

Opus is 2Life's innovative venture that extends our aging in community model to older adults who are financially "in the middle." It will serve those who want to stay in Newton and live in a community as they age, but who are over-income for subsidized housing and not able to comfortably afford the upscale senior living options on the market.

2Life Communities is proposing to build our first Opus in Newton with 174 new attractive, sustainable and adaptable apartments, garage and surface parking, and multiple green spaces. Opus will be joined physically and programmatically to Coleman House creating an income-inclusive community. A two story connector will have creative dining, fitness and wellness, arts and community events as well as staff coordination of home care and health care. Our new residents will contribute to the vibrancy of the JCC campus.

Public support from Newton residents will greatly increase our chances of success in securing a Special Permit from the Newton City Council to build Opus.

Please sign this petition to show the City Council that you want to see more housing for older adults in Newton and that you support 2Life's proposal.

Suggestions for "Why is this Important to You?"

Newton's senior population is growing and will increase by 24% by 2030. Many senior households have spent years living in our community and supporting our important institutions. As they age and their incomes decrease, they find it difficult to remain in our wonderful city and are looking for more affordable and supportive community living alternatives.   Opus will provide opportunities to downsize to new adaptable and accessible housing with robust services and supports, including partnerships for wellness and care services.  Opus's model of resident volunteerism will empower our seniors to continue to contribute to the quality of life and offer their experience and wisdom to our younger community members.

Dear Mr. Lipof,
I strongly support Opus Newton, an innovative senior community proposed by the applicant, 2Life Communities.

2Life has a long history of excellence in providing high-quality affordable housing for older adults. Their track record as an excellent owner and good neighbor at their Golda Meir and Coleman Houses underscore why they can be trusted to deliver the same quality at Opus.

Opus is an innovative model for older adults financially "in the middle" – who find it difficult to remain in Newton because of high costs.

I urge the City Council to grant the special permits so Newton's older adults have the opportunity to age with connection and purpose in our wonderful city.

Sincerely,
