Demand Tony Abbott close the Nauru detention centre

  • by: Michael Taylor
  • recipient: Tony Abbott, Prime Minister of Australia

It’s been described it as "a human rights catastrophe. A toxic mix of uncertainty, unlawful detention and inhumane conditions."
It has been likened to a concentration camp with an overwhelming sense of despair.

Plagued by hunger strikes, riots, attempted suicides and self-harm, this facility houses 1,162, while it was only built for 800.

If you are thinking this is a concentration camp referred to in our history books, something we can look back on with the knowledge that we have learnt from our past, never to be repeated. You would be wrong. Neither is this a prison camp in some 3rd world country, nor is it a prison; You will be shocked to know, this is an Australian detention center, located in Nauru.
The detention of asylum seekers stretches into years, not weeks, and the impact on their physical and mental health is disastrous.

Not only are these refugees facing an unknown future from the Australian government, but the locals in Nauru are also making sure that these asylum seekers are not welcome.
With bashings that have left refugees in hospitals and constant threats for them to leave, the refugees are truly stuck in the middle of two unrelenting governments. Yet there plight is largely ignored, or swept under the carpet. The less Australia knows of the conditions that these asylum seekers have to face, the less they have to answer for.

We understand that refugees have to be housed somewhere, but these are humans, not animals.

Both the citizens of Nauru and the asylum seekers are victims of the Australian government’s appalling human rights violations. Refugees are not safe on Nauru and must be brought back to Australia

This faculty is a national embarrassment, and an international outrage. Mr. Abbott: We demand shorter processing times for asylum seekers that is measured in weeks instead of years. We demand that asylum seekers be given better living conditions and proper medical facilities. We demand that they get treated like fellow human beings. We demand you close the Nauru detention center.

Update #19 years ago
A new medical report has revealed even more disturbing details of the horrors at Nauru: among them, allegations of sexual assault by guards and extremely unsanitary living conditions. Medical staff have characterized the treatment of young detainees as child abuse. Please continue to sign and share the petition - we must close this cruel centre once and for all!
