We want to ride the bus! NW Oklahoma City needs a new bus line!

The OKC Metro area has many areas that are underserved by mass-transit. One of those areas is NW Oklahoma City, where I live.

I would love to be able to take the bus to work, to buy our family's groceries and to do other errands but this is not an option. I live in a rapidly growing portion of OKC City limits (near NW 150th & Rockwell) but the closest bus stop is 4 miles away. Occasionally I ride my bike to catch this bus but this is not practical on a daily basis.

Here is a map of OKC's current bus coverage in NW Oklahoma City:

Map of current bus coverage for NW OKC

It is important to note what major shopping centers, employers and high-density housing areas (including apartments and condominiums) are not served by the current coverage (being at least 3 miles or more from the nearest bus stop).

Some examples include:

  • Francis Tuttle Vo-tech
  • PC North High School
  • Farmer's Insurance call Center (Memorial & Rockwell)
  • Pay.com (Memorial & Rockwell)
  • Brandon Place Apartments (Memorial & Rockwell)
  • Crest Grocery Store (Hefner & Rockwell)
  • Homeland Grocery Store (NW 120th & Rockwell)
  • Forest Creek Apartments (Rockwell & NW 122nd)
  • Deer Creek Apartments (Rockwell & NW 122nd)
  • Tammaron Village Apartments (near Rockwell & NW 122nd)

To fix this problem, I am proposing that COTPA add one bus line.

This bus line would run in a continuous loop starting at NW Expressway & Linwood Avenue (providing connection to the #8 bus), then would go northwest on NW Expressway, then turn North on Rockwell. The bus would continue on Rockwell until it reached Memorial Road. The bus would then turn east on Memorial Road (aka the frontage road for the Kilpatrick turnpike) until it reached Mercy Hospital where it would turn around (at this end there would be connections with the #5 bus. (As for the first run of the day, the bus would go from the terminal to the Mercy hospital stop)

A map of this proposed route can be found here:

I urge all who believe that we should have decent bus coverage in all of Oklahoma City (including NW) to sign this petition.

Dear Mr. Kauffman:

We write as concerned residents and workers of Oklahoma City. We believe that the OKC Metro area has many areas that are underserved by mass-transit and that one of these areas is NW Oklahoma City.

Many of us would love to be able take the bus to work, to buy our family's groceries, to go to the doctor or school,  but this is not an option. For those of who live or work in NW OKC, we are miles from the nearest bus stop.

In the past the argument has been made that NW OKC does not have sufficient population or traffic density to support bus service, but this is simply not the case today.

Many major shopping centers, employers and high-density housing areas (including apartments and condominiums) are not served by the current coverage (being at least 3 miles or more from the nearest bus stop).

Some examples include:

  • Francis Tuttle Vo-tech

  • PC North High School

  • Farmer's Insurance call Center (Memorial & Rockwell)

  • Pay.com (Memorial & Rockwell)

  • Brandon Place Apartments (Memorial & Rockwell)

  • Homeland Grocery Store (NW 120th & Rockwell)

  • Forest Creek Apartments (Rockwell & NW 122nd)

  • Deer Creek Apartments (Rockwell & NW 122nd)

  • Tammaron Village Apartments (near Rockwell & NW 122nd)

To begin to fix this problem, we are proposing that COTPA add one bus line.

This line would run in a continuous loop starting at NW Expressway & Linwood Avenue (providing connection to the #8 bus), then would go northwest on NW Expressway and then turn North on Rockwell. The bus would continue on Rockwell until it reached Memorial Road. (As for the first run of the day, the bus would go from the terminal to the Mercy hospital stop, otherwise this bus would run in a continuous loop and not make trips back to the terminal)

We pay our taxes and do our part. We believe it is time that all of OKC have decent bus service.
