As both citizens and visitors of Greenville, South Carolina, we are proud of the success of downtown’s redevelopment, and the how the preservation of our historic and natural resources has helped to maintain a unique sense of place. We expect that as the city considers the development plans for the property where the historic Wilkins Mansion is located, the same emphasis be put on the places that make its neighborhoods unique. The Wilkins Mansion has always been a landmark for the neighborhoods along Augusta Street and an asset to our community. We respect that the Wilkins Mansion is a character defining resource for the Greater Sullivan Neighborhood and its past, present, and future citizens. As one of the most historically significant resources in our community, we reject the notion that it is expendable.
We recognize that development will happen on this site, and while we welcome the opportunities afforded us by such investment, we value the rehabilitation of this existing resource over generic development that has no ties to our heritage. Preservation and development can coexist here in a sustainable way that benefits the current and future owners, as well as the surrounding community, and we insist that our elected officials make it happen here.
We, the undersigned, as citizens, taxpayers, or supporters of the City of Greenville, South Carolina demand that the Historic Mansion be protected, so that the structure can be rehabilitated as part of any future development of the property.
