Stop Use and Remove the Gas Chamber at the Shelter of Hope in Cobourg, ON

It is a national tragedy that 3 to 4 million shelter animals must be euthanized every year. Until a solution is reached, the final moments for these animals must be humane. The Gas Chamber is NOT humane!

If you're sensitive to animal suffering, its operation cannot help but disturb you. Animals are placed into a small, dark, box, one that's sometimes full of the smells of the animals who came before them—many of whom may have urinated or defecated before they died. Inside the chamber, the pets claw at the walls as their lungs burn and they vomit. Killing a cat or dog this way can take up to 30 minutes (some dogs have survived even past 30 minutes).

Dear Sir;

It has been brought to the attention of local residents that the Shelter of Hope has and possibly still uses a Gas Chamber in its facility.

As I'm sure you are aware, there are other means of which to euthanize if need be, EBI is a quick, almost pain-free way to euthanize.

  •  Euthanasia by Injection (EBI) is the safest way for humans to euthanize shelter animals.

  •  EBI is the most humane method of euthanizing shelter animals.

  •  It is dangerous to put aggressive and/or wild animals in the gas chamber. Sedation methods utilized with EBI are safer for shelter staff in cases of highly aggressive and wild animals, and more humane for those animals.

  •  EBI provides shelter workers the dignity they deserve when facing the difficult reality of euthanizing pets.

  • EBI is also less costly than the gas chamber

That being said, we, concerned animal lovers, respectfully ask that you remove the Gas Chamber at the Shelter of Hope completely.
