Stop legal shark finning/hunting in Rhode Island and worldwide!

Sharks are being driven to the brink of extinction due to a huge increase in demand for their fins over the last 20 years or so!  I am a RI resident and hope I can begin with my hometown where shark finning is legal..and expand my cause from there!

Every year tens of millions of sharks die a slow death because of shark finning. Finning is the inhumane practice of hacking off the shark’s fins and throwing its still living body back into the sea. The sharks either starve to death, are eaten alive by other fish, or drown. It is barbaric. Shark fins are being “harvested” in ever greater numbers to feed the growing demand for shark fin soup, an Asian “delicacy”. There is ZERO nutritional value in this soup. It  is actually quite harmful for your body due to the extremely high mercury content.

Shark liver oil is in basically ALL beauty and skincare products under the name of "squalene." It is used as moisturizing agent that is cheaper to produce than others. I am a skin therapist and aesthetician; I can attest to the fact that the best moisturizers come from jojoba, olive and coconut oils..just to name a few! It’s useless to use certain cosmetics if they are produced at the cost of sharks. This additive does NOTHING for your skin.

Shark oil is used extensively for numerous ailments and diseases such as arthritis, chronic fatique, psoriasis, and AIDS. There is no scientific or medical backing to this. Think about it, if shark oil was truly a medical breakthrough, wouldn't doctors be prescribing it left and right? There is no accepted scientific evidence that shark provides any medicinal or health benefit. It does not cure ANYTHING.
