Unilever has allegedly been involved in disturbing tests animals in order to make health claims about their products.Unilever is also accused of experiments involving the safety of Hoodia gordonii, a potential diet aid, in pregnancy. It was allegedly fed to pregnant rabbits, which were then killed just before they were due to give birth.
For what cause must the animal endure such a wretched, tortured existence?
Millions of rabbits, dogs, cats, mice and other animals are burned, poisoned and killed in painful and unnecessary tests each year for the sake of cosmetics and toiletries.
Some will undergo irritant tests that cause severe chemical burns to their sensitive skin; others will be forced to ingest harmful chemicals that can lead to fatal poisoning. To study the 'effects', animals are often left to languish for days without pain relief. This tells us nothing about toxicity to humans.

Over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned, and abused in US labs every year.92% of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work.Labs that use mice, rats, birds, reptiles and amphibians are exempted from the minimal protections under the Animal Welfare Act (AWA).
Up to 90% of animals used in U.S. labs are not counted in the official statistics of animals tested. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has noted that 92 percent of all drugs that are shown to be safe and effective in animal tests fail in human trials because they don’t work or are dangerous. And of the small percentage that are approved for human use, half are relabeled because of side effects that were not identified in animal tests.
