Phillips 66 and 76 gas stations: Stop funding climate denial and animal abuse! Quit ALEC now!

  • by: Nathan Empsall

Do we want our public schools teaching climate denial to our children? Do you want the companies we have to patronize several times a month to lobby our state lawmakers to make the schools teach those lies?

Tell Phillips 66: Stop funding climate denial and animal abuse - quit the ALEC legislation factory at once! Shell did, and so you can too!

ALEC, the American Legislative Exchange Council, is a shadowy right-wing legislation factory funded by corporations like Koch Industries, State Farm, and PhillipMorris. Thousands of state legislators (almost all Republicans) are also members of ALEC. The corporations' lobbyists write "model bills" that the lawmakers take home and try to pass. Many of these bills attack our shared global climate by attacking clean energy laws, encouraging fracking, and requiring that public schools teach climate denial. Deadly Stand Your Ground gun laws and attacks on voting rights have also come from ALEC.

The group even protects animal abusers through cruel "ag-gag" legislation that makes it harder to film and stop industrial animal cruelty.

Phillips 66, which owns familiar gas brands, is a member of ALEC, which means they're funding climate denial. In fact, they only joined ALEC in 2014 after splitting off from ConocoPhillips which had stopped funding ALEC years before, making it clear that this dirty money is very intentional. Google, Facebook, and even Shell have quit ALEC over climate change - it's time for Phillips 66 to do the same!

I demand that Phillips 66 stop funding climate denial and ag gag laws, and leave ALEC permanently today. ConocoPhillips left ALEC before your companies split and Shell left ALEC over climate change just this year, so you can too!

Update #18 years ago
Correction: This petition previously said that ConocoPhillips (CP) is an ALEC member. The actual ALEC member is Phillips 66. The two companies split in 2012 & CP stopped funding ALEC. A news report said CP is once again funding ALEC under the name Phillips 66, but they are separate companies. CP's Director of Media Relations has confirmed to me that CP is still not funding ALEC. This petition has been changed to reflect Phillips 66 as the proper target. I apologize for the confusion.
