Save Alaska's wildlife & Tongass National Forest from clearcutting! Deadline November 25!

The State of Alaska wants to clear-cut 65 miles of roadless areas in the pristine Tongass National Forest to construct a new road out of Juneau. This is a terrible idea: Experts say the road would be closed at least a month out of the year because of treacherous avalanches, local residents have voted against it, and the environment surrounding one of the world’s deepest fjords would be devastated!

The state government wants to set a precedent of development inside protected federal land and national parks. This would put the Arctic Wildlife National Refuge and other important treasures at risk.

The plan could go through, unless you voice your opposition now!

The proposed 65-mile, $574 million dead-end road would forever alter the character of one of the largest roadless areas in the national forest system. It would destroy wetlands, tidal areas, and fish habitat, and cut through important habitat for bald eagles, bears, marten, mountain goats, moose, Steller sea lions, and the Alexander Archipelago wolf - which the U.S. Forest Service recently determined may have to be listed for protection under the Endangered Species Act. These animals deserve better, and so do Alaska’s residents.

The state government is accepting comments until November 25 – sign the petition and make your voice heard today!

I strongly oppose construction of the new Juneau Access Road. Local residents have made it clear that the road is a bad idea, and would prefer better ferries instead. This is a colossal waste of half-a-billion dollars, puts our pristine wildlands and precious wildlife at risk, and exposes drivers to an enormous avalanche risk. There are better ways to spend our money!

Update #19 years ago
The forestry office for the Tongass National Forest has been criticized for mismanagement of forestry funds by propping up failing timber companies. What does this mean for the proposed plan of clearcutting thru this old growth forest to build a road to nowhere. Hearings will start next month before the 9th circuit court.
