Police shot a pitbull because of allegations of a dog bite that was provoked and then left to die!  A young boy was throwing rocks at the dog, according to witnesses and in defending itself, the East St. Louis police officer shot at the animal three times, hitting it twice, once in the head and once in the shoulder.  The absurd fact is, once hitting the poor dog, a pitbull mix, the officer just walked away, leaving it there to die. Is this not inhumane?!  This is a live, living being that was being tormented by a child; granted the bite was inappropriate but because of “labels,” the animal was judged and prosecuted like a criminal “innocent til proven not guilty.”

Whether the dog was guilty of the crime, against witness claims, the animal should not have been shot and left there to die like yesterday’s trash!  The executive director of the Gateway Pet Guardians was driving by a full 24 hours later with her husband and noted the poor struggling in the field.  Both worked together to get the dog into their truck and get it cared for. At least the dog still had some spunk as if fighting for its life.

Neighbors in the area of the occurrence were outraged that the officer just shot the dog and left it there to die but when called on it, the police acted as though they were surprised at such behavior.  One of them said,

“We should have done something proper. How do we shoot a dog and leave a damn dog in a field?” the officer said. “And you wonder why these people say the [expletive] they say about us.”  News reporters are trying to get a statement from the East St. Louis Police department but they are yet to respond.  What a surprise!  Nothing they could say would dismiss the fact that they shot and left a living being out in a field to die for more than 24 hours before it was rescued.

The dog seems to be on the road to recovery.  Luckily, the shot in the head did not penetrate the skull and enter into the brain.  While being treated and “placed on trial,” the dog is staying at the St. Clair County Animal Control.  This dog named Colt does have a microchip and authorities are trying to reach the owners on record.  In the meantime, authorities have to determine if this dog is really vicious or just in a defensive situation when subjected to the rock throwing.  The little boy is being treated for his injuries but not his act of animal cruelty at such a young age.

Please sign the petition and share to get justice for Colt the pitbull that was shot by the police and left to die!!! This in itself is a form of animal cruelty by a department that is supposed to serve and protect in a leadership role!  Great role models!!!

St Louis Law Enforcement – State Department of Law Enforcement – Your department is supposed to protect its constituents and all local residents; to be a role model, per se.  However, your own people go and shoot an animal after it was being tormented by a child throwing rocks, then leave it to die where it was shot!!!  This is clearly animal cruelty.  Many citizens witnessed the act of this boy and the shooting by the officer.  The dog should have been captured and brought to animal control or have them come and capture the animal and brought to justice humanely!  This was cruel and unjust what was done to this live, living being!!
