Tell Ofcom - the Green Party is a Major Party!

  • by: Rachel C.
  • recipient: Ofcom, the communications regulator

The Green Party have yet again been unfairly maligned by UK media. Despite the Green Party now having the third biggest membership in England and Wales (after Labour and the Conservatives), Ofcom have decided they should receive only half as much airtime as UKIP during the election.

Parties classed as 'major' by Ofcom are given a minimum of two party election broadcasts by each broadcaster they regulate. Other parties only get a minimum of one. UKIP has just been given new 'major' party status by Ofcom in England and Wales. The Green Party has not. Green Party membership has jumped from 15,000 at the start of last year to nearly 57,000 as of the 17th March 2015.

Tell Ofcom to change their decision and categorise the Green Party as a 'major party'. Not doing so is deeply unfair and reflects establishment politics, not the politics that the people of the UK clearly want. It does not take account of the phenomenal growth of the Green Party in the UK in the last year, nor the decline of UKIP and the Liberal Democrats, nor the unfair voting system.

The political system is stacked against parties like the Greens. Take your stand for a fairer, different alternative and sign the petition.

Dear Ofcom,

Since October when you made your original ruling that the Green Party of England and Wales is not a major party, the people have spoken. Their membership has jumped from 15,000 at the start of last year to nearly 57,000 as of the 17th March - and by the time you read this it may well be over 60,000 (including the Scottish Greens, that means nearly 70,000 members).

When you put this alongside UKIP, who are getting twice as much airtime as the Green Party despite being a single issue party and having nearly half as many members, and the Lib Dems, who are polling at lower numbers than the Greens as well as having fewer MEPs, we think all the evidence suggests that the Green Party is now a major party in the UK.

Please revise your rulings in the light of fast-changing evidence that the people of the UK want to hear more of the Greens and less of UKIP.

Thanks,
