Curb Coal Dependence in South Africa and Save Lives!

85% of electricity in South Africa is dependent on coal. 2,700 premature deaths are caused each year by these emissions.

In an effort to reduce negative health impacts like these, the South African government has enacted new minimum emission standards. But big polluters are fighting back!

Eskom, South Africa's public power utility, has applied to postpone its compliance with the new standards. They want to continue to pump out sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and particulate matter at double the maximum recommended by the World Health Organization!

Coal dependence like that in South Africa must be stopped. Sign the petition to commend South Arica on its decision to regulate emissions and to enforce the standards for all power plants. No power plant should be the exception to the rule!

Dear [Decision maker],

Thank you for enacting a new minimum emission standard in South Africa. These standards will curb carbon dependence and help prevent preventable deaths.

However, I am concerned that Eskom has applied to postpone its compliance with the standards. I urge you to uphold your promise to reduce emissions and end South Africa's dependence on coal-fueled power.
