No More Deaths at SeaWorld: Free Releasable Orcas

In his new book, Death at SeaWorld, NYC reporter David Kirby documents how captive killer whales at SeaWorld suffer severe psychological and physical trauma.

Kirby relates staff reports of cruelties, including Orcas having damaged teeth removed by power drills and calves being separated from their mothers, leaving both mourning and deeply distressed.

Jane Goodall says that Kirby’s book “eloquently documents” the fact that killer-whale captivity only benefits the captors, adding that it’s impossible to read it and “come to any other conclusion.”

Along with the book release, Animal Welfare Groups (The Whale and Dolphin Conservation Society, The Humane Society and the Animal Welfare Institute) are publicizing results of the "first-ever opinion poll on keeping Orcas in captivity" for public display. The poll found only one in four Americans favor the practice.

It’s time to stop limiting the Orca’s world to one of tortured enslavement.
Tell SeaWorld to stop its cruel practices and free all releasable Orcas into the wild.

We, the undersigned, believe it is past time to stop the cruel and unnatural practice of enslaving wild animals for human entertainment and business profit.

The Orca is a highly sophisticated, intelligent and social animal, whose natural habitat is nothing like that of SeaWorld and other aquariums. Enslaving and using these animals for profit is little different than doing the same to humans, and it must be stopped.

With the release of Kirby’s book and the poll showing most Americans are opposed to the practice, there could not be a better time than the present to end this inexcusable cruelty forever and free all releasable Orcas into the wild.

Most poll participants also noted that they would not stop visiting SeaWorld if the use of Orcas ended, so SeaWorld should not claim that ending the practice would hurt business, even though that should not be the first concern anyway.

Until this is done, we request that you treat these whales and all marine animals as humanely as possible and stop the cruel practices documented in Kirby’s book.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
