Siamese Fighters Deserve Better!

The Betta splendens or Siamese fighting needs to be better understood. It is a common myth that they live solitary lives in teacup sized environments filled with dirty water and they, like all other fish need plant life in their environments.

These fish at pet shops are being kept in clear plastic tubs; devoid of any plant life on shelves close together. The males are forced to stare at each other without anywhere to hide. As they are very territorial fish this is a stressful and unpleasant environment for them.

They are air breathers and although they are aggressive towards males of their own species they are tropical fish which do very well in community tanks.

These common misconceptions have led to pet shops punting tiny, unhealthy environments. Sign now, urge the NSPCA to enforce better care of these tropical fish.

Research indicates that Betta species prefer a water temperature of around 23 °C–27 °C (73.4 °F–80.6 °F) Bettas are also affected by the PH levels of the water they are kept in. Most ideal levels for Bettas would be at a neutral PH(7.0) They have an organ known as the labyrinth organ which allows them to breathe air at the water's surface. This organ was thought to allow the fish to be kept in unmaintained aquaria, but this is a misconception, as poor water quality makes all tropical fish, including Betta splendens, more susceptible to diseases such as fin rot. It is popular to keep betta fish in very small containers for display around the home. Contrary to popular belief this can stress the fish causing health issues. Bettas prefer to be kept in larger tanks or community tanks. The smallest tank recommended is 5 gallons, and bigger is always better.

Please consider taking action against the misconceptions which allow pet shops to neglect these little fish. They should not be treated differently from other tropical fish, they need and deserve the same care and treatment.
