STOP EUTHANIZING BEARS FOR CONTACT WITH HUMANS: SEDATE AND SEND TO REPUTABLE SANCTUARY INSTEAD

  • by: Ruth McD
  • recipient: Sally Jewell, United States Secretary of the Interior

Two bear cubs euthanized Wednesday, September 2, 2015. One of them approached a hiker, Stephanie Rivkin, but didn't harm her. She took video of them with her cell phone. Close contact with any wildlife is never a good idea. She spoke with the people at Sessions Woods Wildlife Management Area in Burlington, about the encounter and her first words were, "please don't hurt the bears." A petition has been circulating online to save the bear's life, that had received over 45,000 signatures at this time.

Video of the bear, which was taken by the hiker, showed tags on its ears that had been placed by CT DEEP staff.

DEEP records show the bear was first tagged as a yearling in its winter den, and was captured and relocated at least one other time.

There have been many incidents, where humans encounter bears, and instead of leaving, they stay and try to take pictures, videos. It is the fault of this human if the bear attacks.

End the euthanizing of bears. Sedate them instead, and send to a reputable sanctuary, so they can live, and will no longer be in contact with humans.

If you are an animal advocate, I know you won't stand by letting the murders of these innocent bears, especially cubs, who are in their own territory in the first place, happen anymore.
