Sandwich food chain Quiznos has recently drawn praise from animal advocacy groups like the Humane Society of the United States for scheduling the elimination of a controversial industry practice. The use of pig “gestation crates”—very small cages wherein breeding pigs are confined—has long been condemned across the board by animal welfare activists, scientists, business owners, and consumer advocates alike. The majority of American breeding pigs are confined in these cages for their whole lives, in the most wretched living conditions; the cages are so small, the animals are virtually immobilized, spending years trapped and repeatedly impregnated until they die in misery.
